Hangerer is located in the main ridge of the Ötztal Alps. The mountain lies in the part of the main ridge known as Gurgler Ridge, named after the villages in the valley. This ridge is bordered by the Hochwilde road (to the south) and the Timmelsjoch road on its northern side. The mountain is situated northwest of Mittlerer Seelenkogel.
At the summit, there is a large summit cross and it offers a beautiful view towards the Ötztal Alps.

Normal route from Obergurgl:
The trail to Schönwieshütte mainly follows a wide forest road through the Obergurgl ski area. A part of the route can alternatively be covered by a new cable car. From Schönwieshütte, you need to switch to a narrow path that leads to the summit. The higher you go, the more challenging the ascent becomes, but it does not include any climbing sections. After fresh snow, the path may be more difficult. Under normal circumstances, the ascent is quite easy and very well marked. Descent via the same route.

9/2025 The path is officially closed due to falling rocks. However, this is not unusual for hikers.
