In the vicinity of the peak, from the end of the 8th to the beginning of the 10th century, there was an important Old Slavic hillfort of the Zličany tribe - the largest early medieval fortification in Bohemia, using high rocks above the Výrovka River.
Northwest of the peak is the gneiss rock Lechův kámen, named after the mythical Slavic prince Lech, brother of the forefather of Čech. According to a legend recorded in the chronicle of Václav Hájek of Libočany, Lech settled at this rock and built a fortified log cabin. Then he lit a fire so that his brother, who was settled above, could recognize Říp, where he would find Lech, by the smoke rising from the fire. And he named this place Kouřim after that smoke.
