The Refuge des Écrins is located at an altitude of 3175 m on a rocky outcrop on the left bank of the Glacier Blanc and faces the highest peak of the massif, Barre des Écrins (4102 m). Access to the hut involves crossing the Glacier Blanc; glacier hiking equipment (crampons, harness, and rope) is required.
In the heart of the Écrins massif, this mountain hut was built in 1969. The current accommodation replaced the old wooden Caron hut from 1921. It welcomes many climbers who ascend Dôme des Écrins, Barre des Écrins, Pic du Glacier d'Arsine, Roche Faurio, or Neige Cordier. In spring, skiers also have a range of routes starting from the hut. In short, this essential base camp offers plenty of options for climbing and ski touring at all levels.
